Russian Spies, Singing

This is very funny. I recommend watching the video and letting the words unfurl before you, but for good measure, they are posted below.

I am voting for Obama despite the FISA vote, the bailout, and every other characteristic he has to indicate that he is a centrist like both Clintons, Jimmy Carter, Lyndon Johnson, and John F. Kennedy. He is not particularly “liberal” and he is certainly not a leftist. And yes, I have voted for third parties before. And I am not a liberal, I am on the left, and there is a difference.

I really do think all the Hillary Clinton voters who now refuse to vote for Obama are racists and/or naïve. And they are strangely uninterested in Hillary Clinton’s own views on this matter. Rather then come out directly for McCain, they talk about how we must be kind about Palin.

I am tired of hearing that because Palin is a woman she deserves my support, or deserves for me to be ultra-kind about her views. I am tired of being condescended to by people who say, but you know, some women will be conservative! Yes, like Margaret Thatcher, and it does not mean I have to vote for them or that I cannot dismiss their views as easily as I would if they were pronounced by a man.

I find it very strange that we are supposed to make special allowances for Palin because she is a woman. When I see Palin be nice to ANYONE, or SUPPORT ANY WOMEN, I may change my mind but so far I have never seen her be nice in any way, or do anything for any women. I am fascinated to see so many women call their support for the white supremacist patriarchy “feminist.”

I sat out my first presidential election, in 1976, because I was so disgusted that the Democrats had chosen that conservative Jimmy Carter. I have voted for third parties on other occasions. However I find it very interesting that so many people have discovered third parties precisely when the Democrats put up a Black candidate.

  1. Apparently these guys aren’t really Russian. Oh well – I still like them!

  2. They may not be Russian, but they sure look and act Russian!

  3. Great post. I was struck by this:

“I am tired of hearing that because Palin is a woman she deserves my support, or deserves for me to be ultra-kind about her views. I am tired of being condescended to by people who say, but you know, some women will be conservative! Yes, like Margaret Thatcher, and it does not mean I have to vote for them or that I cannot dismiss their views as easily as I would if they were pronounced by a man.”

Maybe I’m one of the condescenders, so I thought I should try to clarify the point before taking up permanent residence on the bad pile.

There are various feminisms. Liberal feminism is first and foremost about including women in all the opportunities enjoyed only by men in a patriarchy. It’s about pluralism of access to live options. Liberal feminism wins any time a woman as such is included where women were not before.

There’s nothing in that analysis that says anyone has to vote for Palin. The cool thing is that she’s a live option. If she’s not your option, that’s fine too, and say so all you want. That’s the liberal public sphere at work. We win some, we lose some.

If you think only certain kinds of people and policies should be live options in the public sphere, you’re not a liberal. Leftists as such are not liberal, and just as you say that’s an important distinction to keep present. In general, leftists and rightists have in common that they are tactically liberal when they are in the minority, strategically illiberal when they gain the power to dictate. This looks great when we agree with them, despotic when we don’t.

  4. However I find it very interesting that so many people have discovered third parties precisely when the Democrats put up a Black candidate.

Over a year ago, Tennessee Guerrilla Women women had a blog post addressing the “problem that many of us have with Hillary Clinton. We want a woman to be president, but not a rightwing woman and not a centrist woman…What we want is a progressive president!” <a href=”http://guerillawomentn.blogspot.com/2007/06/hillary-clinton-and-vagina-litmus-test.html”

All that seemed to change awfully quickly once Edwards was out, and the race was between Clinton and a black man.

I’ve never thought that was a coincidence.

Thank you for your astute comments here, which hearten me considerably about the future of feminism.

  5. Carl, the McCain campaign didn’t get women the right to vote and run for office – that was done long ago and not by their ilk but by mine.

You’re still condescending and there *is* democratic socialism.

Victoria – nice to meet you. This post was created because I saw one from Dr. Violet Socks that infuriated.

“All that seemed to change awfully quickly once Edwards was out, and the race was between Clinton and a black man.”

Yes – that’s what I notice. It may be that gender is the first difference, that oppression of women is the oldest form of oppression, etc., etc., and I realize I am in denial about how bad misogyny really is and how much of an impact it has had on my very own life. Still I am convinced that in this country they will give rights to white women far before they give them to anyone else.

  6. P.S. In this post, WoC PhD is ACTUALLY kind about Palin. Read it, it is worth it. Very.
