On “Southern Hostility”

Today I was describing to my child, who lives in Austin, Texas, my culture shock upon returning to Maringouin.

Professor Zero: It is not that Mexico is not violent, of course…
Post-Louisianian One: …but Mexico does not have that Southern hostility.

And that is exactly it. I flashed on a conversation with my very first neighbor in my very first Southern city, a Southerner himself; he is the one who raised and articulated the issue.

He talked about the early age at which children already become filled with a lifetime’s worth of hostility here; how you can see when it has happened, how it influences their stances and the look in their eyes.

Axé.
