C’est fascinant

My student went home to another state for a routine medical procedure and his documentation turns out to come from a clinic on an Indian reservation! This is a first for me, so rare, finding Native Americans from the U.S. in college here!

And his class says I have strange course goals for a foreign language because I want to teach them to speak it! I am from California and I have studied nine foreign languages, and we were always expected to speak them.

If you teach foreign languages, do you ask people to speak? If not, why not? If in the past you only taught people to write and you now also teach them to speak, when did you change?

Axé.

  1. I teach English to 16 to 19-year-old students in Switzerland and they are expected to speak, write, and read the language with some fluency.
