Francisco Izquierdo Ríos

Here is a reasonable point of view on the value of that classic study of Vallejo: Izquierdo Ríos saw that it was important to know Vallejo’s contexts, in part so as not to substitute one’s own contexts and assumptions; and the indigenous element is real and important.

He also started the vallejista tradition of making pilgrimages to Santiago de Chuco and of explaining Vallejo by saying he was mestizo, cholo and so on. It is not evident to me that this repetitive trend is beneficial, although the perception is valid and the voyage is interesting.

The last time I went to Santiago de Chuco there was a new, fancy road and Vallejo’s house had been renovated beyond recognition. I was glad I had been there earlier, and wished I had gone earlier still.

Axé.
